Lisa:
Hello friends! Lisa here.
I hope you enjoyed season 1 of Magpie Adventures. This is a short episode to wrap things up so I can get things ready for season 2!
This is how we’re going to do it. The seasons will be short, but there will be 4 every year. Each season will have a vibe to explore with 3 or 4 locations. And one of these wrap up episodes.
This season the theme was gathering and togetherness. We got creative at Gather Textiles. we explored Edmonton Public Library’s iconic Strathcona branch. And we felt nurtured at Otto restaurant.
When it came to being together, there were a couple of through lines for all of these locations. Like wood!
Every location mentioned the comfort of working with or being surrounded by wood.
There was joy!
And, of course, there was visiting.
Each location had its own way of making people feel comfortable to strike up conversations and spend time sharing ideas with each other.
Friends, when I reached out to folks about coming to record in their space, they didn’t know who I was, and none of this show existed yet. To them, I was some random person who said “Hey, wanna be on my show about feelings? It’s a brand new experiment. You in?”
And they were! This was not a small ask. But not only did folks say yes, they welcomed me and you into their space. They gave us a tour and took extra time to show us some cool sounds unique to the space. I have so much gratitude.
So thank you again to Kim McCollum, weaving master and owner at Gather Textiles. To Emiliya Picard, Community Librarian at EPL Strathcona. And to Ed Donszelmann, owner of Otto restaurant.
And a big thanks to their teams and colleagues who were helping out along the way.
Thanks to all of you for trying this out. And more importantly, thank you for all the care and effort you give to create these spaces of gathering. It is very cool.
Friends, Season 2 of Magpie Adventures will be out sometime in May. The theme is about play. Doing things just for fun and enjoyment, getting silly, all that jazz.
Keep up to date with the show by hitting the follow button on your favourite listening platform, or by finding it on instagram at Hi_Magpies.
You’ll see show announcements and maybe some occasional audio treats. And, look, you're going to notice that my social media skills aren't awesome. But I will keep trying! I am determined to learn.
If you have ideas for vibes and places, let me know at himagpies@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you, and maybe even get to share some messages in future episodes.
I hope you liked this very first season. If you did, rate it on your listening platform, give it a review and share it out. Those small steps are a really big support to the show. Especially the sharing.
And above all that, thank you for listening. You being here is what makes the magic happen.
Stay safe, keep trying out there. I’ll leave you with the sound of winter birdsong during a walk in Edmonton’s Central McDougall neighbourhood.
